Chart Industries, Inc. has recently opened a new production facility in Theodore, Alabama where they are building the largest shop-built cryogenic storage containers in the world. To enhance operational efficiency, Chart Industries Inc. requires customized lifting equipment capable of handling complex and heavy-duty tasks in their production processes.
Chart Industries Inc. required a material handling system that could match the pace and complexity of their operations. The project, in partnership with general contractor Brasfield and Gorrie, necessitated a high degree of coordination and confidence in the material handling equipment provider. Chart needed a solution that could support the precise and heavy-duty demands of cryogenic tank production, including the capability for tandem crane operations.

Konecranes delivers tailored semi-gantry and tandem cranes
We provided a tailored solution to meet Chart Industries’ specific requirements, delivering three 35-ton semi-gantry cranes and two 175/40t TRDG cranes, along with a specialized 30-ton vacuum lifter crane equipped with two trolleys. These cranes were designed for seamless tandem operation, enabling the lifting of entire tanks for final load-out—a critical step in Chart’s manufacturing process.
The integration of our material handling systems has significantly enhanced operational efficiency at Chart Industries. The 30-ton vacuum lifter crane has optimized material handling from unloading through to the welding process. Additionally, the 35-ton semi-gantry cranes have improved the movement of materials around the plate rolling machines, while the 175/40- ton cranes have been instrumental in handling tank segments and assembling the complete tanks.

Strong teamwork drives successful project outcomes
Randy Cantrell, Regional Sales Manager, Metals Industry Support AME, states: “Given the fast-paced nature and evolving design requirements of the project, we collaborated closely with Chart Industries’ design and engineering team, the general contractor, and our subcontractors to deliver a flexible solution that adapted to changes until the final order was placed. The teamwork was exceptional, and I look forward to future projects with Brasfield and Gorrie and Chart Industries. The equipment we provided is truly impressive, and seeing it in person highlights its massive scale.”
